To add to the note on respite care- look to the schools for financial help with respite care. The schools are required to have medically trained professionals in most states now (I have a two year old with CP and am also going into the teaching field), but they also should have a special needs coordinator (in Michigan we have Early On and First Steps) who could have a lot of information on who to contact and financial resources available to you. Other places to look include your local church- they can often help to donate money or help you find other organizations that can as well, and your hospital. Generally you can call the hospital but often if you go to patient services and deal with someone directly they can get you direct phone numbers and websites. Hope that helps.

Hi Nathan,
I applaud your efforts in getting your sites up and running. I hope they will help parents with their concerns. If I may ask, how is Sarah doing? I am 43 and afflicted with mild athetoid CP. It affects my right side (limited use of my right hand) and I have a slight speech impediment. I was diagnosed at 16 months. My parents did not hold me back from trying just about anything when I was young. Although not successful in a few things (roller skating for one) I did learn to ride a two wheel bike on my 4th birthday. After high school I found my niche babysitting for several families eventually finding one that I worked for as a nanny for 16 years (they have 5 children, ages 18 to 5). Due to having 2 back surgeries within one year and breaking a foot and a rib, I had to unfortunately quit. Now I keep busy quilting. It is a hobby I acquired in 1991 and I thank God I love to do it as it keeps me busy.

I see you have Neil Sauter's adventure listed. My parent's saw him walking towards Petoskey, MI the other day. I hope he is successful in his efforts to raise the funds.

If you should come across any articles on aging and Cerebral Palsy, would you please forward me the link(s). It is next to impossible to find any information written on the subject that is current. Everything I find is from the '90's. I would appreciate it. My best to you, Sarah and your family!

Sincerely,
Laura

[size=6]I was at Ikea the other day, and found a very inexpensive solution for kids who need an adjustable, sturdy desk.

In their home office section, you can purchase a desk called a GALLANT in 2 main parts...the desktop, and the legs. The nice thing about the legs, is that you can choose between adjustible height, or legs with castors. The desktop itself can be purchased in a variety of colors. I went with the adjustable height desk. This enables even sloping the desk to angle for your child. The legs with castors are not adjustable height, unfortunately...so I stayed away from them.

The assembled desk is EXTREMELY solid and durable. The entire kit was $139. I found it very useful for my child, as I could adjust the height to fit her wheelchair or other chairs as needed.

She helps with bathing, exercise/stretching/positioning routine, clean laundry, wash bottles, etc. Because my daughter has CP, we get medicaid through the state of Wisconsin. Medicaid pays for this service.

In addition to that, we have a respite care organization through the county that will reimburse us for respite, too. They give us a certain amount of money every year for respite. I think last year it was $250, and we have to pay our respite person $10/hr. This respite organization also reimburses for one full weekend a year (up to $200 for respite) and provides a free hotel room for us along with coupons for free meals and a movie. This is all through the Rock County Respite Care Services, which is funded by United Way, I think.
